What does AHIMSA mean?
AHIMSA is a magical Sanskrit (one of our most ancient root languages!) word, 'अहिंसा' referring to non-harm of the self, other living beings and Mother Earth.

What skin type is your skincare suitable for?
Our skincare is gentle enough to be used by all humans, formulated specifically for our delicate skin.

Is your skincare formulated with essential oils?
Essential oils, especially organic, in low dilutions can be very beneficial in terms of their positive action on the skin and their ability to promote a sense of psychological wellbeing. Although, high levels of essential oils have been known to irritate sensitive skin, cause severe skin sensitising and sun sensitivity (phototoxicity). We have a strict ingredient policy and completely avoid specific essential oils that are known for their extremely high irritation risk.

How is your skincare different from other skincare brands?
We are inspired by the ethical principle of AHIMSA, a Sanskrit word referring to non-harm of the self, others and Mother Earth. We create healthy skinc͟͟a͟͟r͟͟e͟͟ with the freshest, finest quality, responsibly-sourced sustainably harvested organic and fair trade ingredients. Completely FREE FROM harsh skin weakening non-fatty alcohols, animal-derived ingredients, synthetic dyes, artificial flavours & fragrances, GMOs, pesticides, petroleum, parabens, synthetic preservatives, water, fillers or thickeners. Mindfully made by hand at our private studio space, in small recorded batches, to our own extensively researched and carefully tested formulations. We only work with trusted ingredient suppliers who practice the same high, ethical standards. We package with biodegradable, recyclable and reusable materials + we're continually striving to find ways to reduce our environmental impact. We have a strict no animal testing policy. Our skincare is purely plant-powered, certified cruelty-free and vegan.

Why should i switch to skincare that is made with organic ingredients?
Our skin is the largest organ, it serves many different functions including acting as a barrier and providing protection, regulating our body temperature and acting as a reservoir for the synthesis of Vitamin D. Our skin contains an extensive network of nerve cells that detect and relay changes in the environment, It also holds together all of our internal organs. Up to 100% of anything we apply topically can penetrate into our body. It varies depending on the chemicals you’re using, the overall health of your skin and your environment (e.g. temperature, moisture). For instance, some oils generally do not penetrate further than the upper 2-3 layers of the epidermis, while essential oils can penetrate all the way into our bloodstream. When you choose organic, you are making sure that the ingredients used do not contain harsh toxic chemicals that have been found to accumulate in human body tissue. Health concerns have been raised about pesticide exposure and how these chemicals could potentially penetrate into your skin, get further into your body, possibly even into your bloodstream – causing adverse effects.

Is your skincare certified organic?
We have not yet went through the costly process of certifying our product line as organic, although almost all of the ingredients we source are certified organic.

Why is it important for you to use organic ingredients?
Organic ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, genetically modified organisms, ionizing radiation, or sewage sludge. Organic farming recognises the direct connection between our health and the way that our food and our skincare products are produced. Organic farmers take a holistic approach that respects and harnesses the power of natural processes to build positive health across the ecology of Mother Earth. Organic farming doesn’t just benefit the end users of its produce. By being less dependent on oil-based fertilisers and pesticides, organic farming methods offer a practical model for addressing earth-friendly production of food and skincare/beauty ingredients. Organic farmers place a strong focus on animal welfare and guarantee good free-range practices for farm animals. Pesticides are heavily restricted therefore organic farmers instead encourage wildlife to control pests/disease and develop nutrient-rich soils. With diverse soils being more resilient, diversity is encouraged with the rotation of crops around the farm over seasons. By avoiding monocultures organic farmers break cycles of pests and disease while building up healthy, fertile soil, Mother Earth's outermost layer ~ the cradle of life for humans, animals and plants.

Is your skincare made with certified organic ingredients?
We are committed to sourcing the highest quality ingredients for all of our products, many of the organic ingredients we use are USDA National Organic Program (NOP) certified. This is our assurance that they have been grown and handled according to the strictest procedures available. Overall, certified organic operations must demonstrate that they are protecting natural resources, conserving biodiversity, and using only approved substances.

What exactly does fair trade certified ingredients mean?
Fair Trade certified ingredients provides us with assurance that ethical business practices are being tracked throughout the supply chain, respecting people and planet. We source Fair Trade ingredients where possible, only buying superior ingredients from trusted partners because we firmly believe in fairness.

Where is your skincare made?
All of our skincare is mindfully made by hand, in small recorded batches at our private studio space in Brooklyn, New York.

Why do you not use recyclable plastic to package your skincare for easier shipping and reduced costs?
For so many reasons, not sure where to start with this one... one reason being the leachable dangers, but also the reality is the rate of plastic that actually gets recycled is surprisingly low. Cosmetic packaging being one of the biggest contributors to ocean pollution. TONS of plastic packaging waste is swirling through the seas and submerged beneath, where it is having devastating effects; strangling marine life, dramatically wrecking the aquatic ecosystem causing widespread environmental destruction. Aside from the devastating impact on our planet’s health, plastic has a hazardous impact on human health since most plastics are made from petroleum (oil or natural gas) and can contain a whole host of other chemicals that are never labeled and can be toxic to humans and animals. At AHIMSA apotheca we are determined to find alternatives to plastic whenever possible and strongly encourage everyone to join us. Together, we can help save our planet!

What is the shelf life of your skincare?
All of our labels feature a period after opening (PAO) symbol with a time such as 6M (6 months) which specifies the length of time to use up the product. For best results, we recommend purchasing our skincare fresh for immediate application and using up each product within 6 months. Keep out of direct sunlight and store at room temperature or below, to maintain maximum freshness and potency.

Do you test on animals?
Never, ever. AHIMSA apotheca skinc͟͟a͟͟r͟͟e͟͟ is certified cruelty-free and vegan.
